Design: A willful designer

Design: A willful designer
<br />Years of professional art design education have taught me “what is beauty”, but I have not yet mastered “how to design beauty”.
I have to charge whatever amount they give me. Because they told me how to
design .
One day in 1999, I came into contact with the Internet by chance. It was love at first sight, and I knew "I can't live without this thing in my life";
In early 2002, I officially left school after not attending classes for more than a year. I started working after graduation and switched from a pure art student to web design. I worked as an artist in a small software company with a monthly salary of 500 yuan. The first few days were painful. My "artistic beauty rules" seemed to be "a waste of time" at work. My boss ordered me to copy foreign websites, but no matter how I copy, it seems like I am just imitating someone else's mistakes. The reason I gave myself was: "Chinese is uglier than English"...

On February 15, 2003, for some reason, I gave up Zhengzhou. With 50 RMB in my pocket, a Samsung monitor in my left hand and a Pentium 3-equipped computer in my right hand, I came to the capital Beijing.
When I first started out, I insisted on "designing with ideas", "not doing pure copying work for others", "not going to work for a company I didn't like", and "I'm from Henan". These factors led to my inability to find a stable job before the SARS epidemic in April.
I remained stubborn and refused to ask my family for money, nor did I flee Beijing to surrender to this society.
SARS is coming. Without a job and without money, survival becomes a problem.
I would like to thank my friend from Blue Ideal for introducing me to private work during the SARS period. 300 pages, 3,000 yuan. I just do what others tell me to do. I cannot have my own ideas or create anything on my own. Survived.
After SARS, I worked for a website outsourcing company in Dazhongsi. The problem I often encountered was "the client does not approve of my design and gives me other websites and asks me to copy them."
I was reluctant at first, but there was no other way. If I didn’t do that, the client wouldn’t agree and I would be fired. So, I have to copy what the client needs.
At that time, I had to charge them whatever price they offered because they were the ones who told me "how it should be designed".
Soon, I left that company because I earned a few thousand dollars to support myself and I could do whatever I wanted without being told what to do.
.
Later, I learned how to design "beauty" in various ways. But I don’t know which design method is more appropriate because I don’t know “why design”.
After I make an offer, they insist on bargaining. Because they told me a more appropriate way to design.

I don't want to go to work, and I don't want to listen to what others tell me to do, so I work full-time as a public designer (euphemistically called a "soho designer").
I often have my own ideas, but clients still often say to me, "Your design is very creative, but it doesn't fit our product because of xxxx. If it doesn't work, just follow this one."
So, I still have to do what he says.
However, at this time they are willing to tell me "why do you use this method" because I can often reject their ideas on some small designs. What they copied for me was only used for reference and learning. When it came to small designs, I could make them accept my ideas very well.
Most of the time I'm the one who makes the offer, and after that they'll definitely bargain. I said "50,000", and they had to pay back less than "40,000".
Because, a large part of the work is actually done by them for me, and often I really need the reference websites they provide.
.

Soon, I had money to spend. I started to study every day why design is needed and what kind of design is needed.
Later, I made a public offer and there was no bargaining allowed. Because I'm the one who tells them what they need, what's right or wrong. At this time, I no longer need clients to give me references, I can tell them more about what they should refer to. I told them what is the right way to think, what the current market and product development direction is, and what kind of design we need.
Of course, I often argue with clients, even quarrel with them, or even fall out with them, and finally cancel the cooperation. Because they think they are right and I think I am right.

But I still persisted, and I told myself, "At least, most of the time I am right." I firmly believe that, "Even if everyone is right, I need to stick to my own opinion, otherwise I am wrong."
I told my clients and myself: "If you can't do it according to my ideas, I won't be able to effectively demonstrate my value, and the result of the cooperation will not be good for everyone. I might as well find a partner whose ideas are more consistent with mine, such as someone who agrees with your ideas more."
At this time, I made an open offer and there was no counter-offer and no possibility of counter-offer.
.
.
One day in 2007, I said in a speech:
Designers first know what beauty is, which is our innate and irreplaceable advantage; real designers need to master the methods of realizing beauty, which is called "design"; excellent designers also need to understand "why it is designed this way before designing", so that good designs can come out; good designers can first know "what kind of design is needed", because you don't design for the sake of design; outstanding designers should guide the future like Jobs. Let us encourage each other.
