For a newly created website, take ASP.NET MVC5 as an example. We did not configure some handlers or modules in the web page configuration file (web.config), such as the SessionStateModule module for processing Session and the UrlRoutingModule module for mapping Url. But we can still access the Session normally in the controller. The URL we requested can still be correctly mapped to the controller and Action. This is because many modules are registered in the modules element of ApplicationHost.config in the IIS configuration file, and these modules are used by all applications hosted by IIS. Modules registered in the ApplicationHost.config file have global scope because they are registered for all Web applications hosted by IIS. Likewise, native code modules defined in the globalModules element of the ApplicationHost.config file also have global scope. If global modules are not required for your web application, you can disable them. Of course, this is only a small part of the functions of this configuration file. Sometimes the mapping relationships we add in IIS Manager will also be stored in this configuration file. As can be seen above, the module and other configuration information we see in IIS Manager comes from here, including the following handler mapping. Click on the handler mapping in IIS, and the handler displayed is the official configuration file. The above handler is the default configuration of IIS. It can be seen that in order to run in multiple environments (including different .NET Framework versions and different CPU versions), IIS takes the processing of *.aspx as an example to analyze this setting. 
In integrated mode, only the runtime version is distinguished, because the managed code is compiled into an intermediate language, which is compiled into native code (nativa-code) when used according to the CPU model of the running machine. So there is no need for configuration like bitness64. In classic mode, asp.net is just an ISAPI extension of iis, and different framework versions and runtime versions have compiled specific aspnet_isapi.dll, so when using it, you only need to select the corresponding dll according to the specific running machine. The files in the IIS configuration storage area are used by all applications supported by IIS and are adapted to different local environments. If you are not completely sure and understand the situation, try not to modify this file. |
