Website redesign is a difficult task for every family

Website redesign is a difficult task for every family
Every family has its own problems, and revision is one of the problems for every IT company. The difficulty of revising the version was clearly demonstrated through conversations among my good friends at the gathering of the Nanjing UCD Book Club. The larger the company and the more it leans towards technology, the more difficult it will be to revise the system. Among them, the most obvious ones are Made-in-China.com where Hongjie works and Trend Micro where Fanxi works.
Revision is a difficult task

Li Fanxi started the discussion on the revision by pointing out the difficulties faced in revision. These difficulties are usually not technical difficulties or design difficulties. This involves opposition from senior management. What they are worried about is that they will lose existing customers after the revision, or that the subsequent costs of the revision are too high, which directly leads to the senior management preferring to patch the product rather than replace it with a new one. Later, Sister Hong's point of view seemed to prove this point. The difference was that the senior management of Sister Hong's company also hoped to achieve a complete transformation. However, in a company like this, revision is not the responsibility of a single department. Whether other departments are willing to go through this process together becomes the biggest problem facing Sister Hong. When it comes to large enterprises, a revision of the design will definitely not be effective just by one person's words. It will inevitably require a large-scale coordinated effort among multiple teams from all departments of the entire enterprise. And it requires accurate calculation of multiple factors such as cost, risk, time, etc.
Later, Cui Wenjun expressed his opinion on the difficulty of pushing forward the revision from a technical perspective. In Wenjun's opinion, the most acceptable limit of revision is revision beyond the framework. There is nothing wrong with changing the content or the functions, but it is best not to do any drastic changes that may hurt your bones. Wenjun is a software engineer, and his views are obviously the same as those of most technical people. And if some company executives come from a technical background, they are usually opposed to the revision. Of course, the revision here refers to a complete revision.
Please rehearse before the battle of revision comes.
The third speaker is Yunhan. Yunhan’s major is quite different from ours. He seems to be engaged in radio and communication. Currently still studying at Southeast University. Yunhan has a hobby of watching trains, which is a very strange hobby. So Yunhan started his speech with the Nanjing Metro ticketing system. He asked, what are the problems with the current ticket machines in Nanjing Metro? He said that many people would subconsciously insert coins first and then choose the station and number of tickets. This will waste a lot of time, and the result will be long queues in front of the ticket machines. The result of long queues is that the subway station is crowded. Then we are faced with the question of how to change it, because even if you change it, there will be people who will say it is not good and they are not used to it. The original process has become familiar to some people who often take the subway. Although it’s not very good, at least old users have accepted it. Of course, accepting it does not mean it will be efficient, and changes must be made. So we should not be too blind, we can clarify the process in advance, build a model, and conduct process testing. Find some people who have never used the original process to test it, record their operation sequence, record the time spent, and then record the results of the second and multiple operations. Then take out the new model and conduct the same test, which will inevitably result in a relatively accurate report. Naturally, it will become clear whether to change it or not. I really appreciate Yunhan’s speech because he was the only one whose speech directly pointed to the solution. A revision is like a foreseen battle. Before doing a sand table exercise to know yourself and your enemy, you will definitely have a grasp of whether you can win the battle.
Revision is the inevitable path .
While some people oppose the revision, there will naturally be others who encourage it. During the meeting, Xiao Weixiong said that he is a person who strongly advocates revision. In Wei Xiong's opinion, revision is the key to solving the problem. If you always do mending, it won't play a decisive role. While a revision may cause you to lose some old users, it will also attract more new users. Therefore, we cannot give up on the revision for fear of losing some users.
Yuan Liang (Green Pepper and Shredded Potato) also supports the revision. His position is very special and he can decide whether to revise or not. His boss gives him a lot of room, but he is confused by the fact that the final decision on whether to use it is still in the hands of the client. Yuan Liang is a very motivated young man. He could have lived a stable life without anyone arranging for him to make any changes. Instead, he took the initiative to make changes and tried his best to use his knowledge to improve the quality of the company's products. Of course, he also said that what made him unhappy was that every time he worked hard to change the content, it was ultimately not recognized by customers. This is not because his changes were not good, but more because Yuan Liang did not have the opportunity to communicate directly with the client, so his work was not recognized.
In addition, from the user's perspective, things that are not easy to use should be changed. This can be said to be the opinion of Zhang Jie who was sitting next to me. She talked about a user experience she had. She went to Nanjing Library to borrow books and repeatedly found that the query system of the library was very inconvenient and it was difficult to find books that met her requirements, of course, on the premise that the library had these books. Moreover, their renewal process was extremely inconvenient, which resulted in her and many other readers being fined for not being able to renew their books in time. She believes that as the third largest library in China and the fourth largest in Asia, these details should be kept up to date.
Revision is not only destruction, it also means rebirth .
Among all the people present at that time, I think Chen Lei’s speech was the most interesting. He is an operations manager and he looks at things from a non-technical, non-design perspective. He did not directly put forward his point of view, but only introduced how their company was revamped. Every revision of their company is actually a continuous enrichment process. He did not say whether he would lose customers, but he was very proud of the prospect of richer content after the revamp. I think this is also something we need to think about when we revise the version. We not only need to change, we also need to add. The revision not only destroys some of the original things, but also provides more fresh blood for our products and websites, thus bringing new life.
If you want to revise something, you have to revise it well.
In fact, I am also very cautious about revising the version. I have encountered opposition when I was discussing whether to revise Shan Yi's blog and Yu Zhenzhi's blog. Some people say that once it is changed, it may lose the original image in everyone’s mind. For this reason, I can only make slight changes in some details. But I think it will still need to be changed, but I may use a multi-step revision process, which means that the changes will not be too big at the beginning. The first round of revisions should be made under the premise that most people can still agree with it. After everyone is accustomed to the first round of revisions, gradual revisions can be made to hide the progress of the revision. Convert a large earthquake into multiple small earthquakes and release them. Of course, this is just a revision plan for my own personal website. When it comes to the redesign of a large company, there are many factors involved and more things need to be done. There will also be more pressure. Because I have never worked in a large company, I feel that I cannot deeply understand their difficulties and cannot provide my opinions. But one thing is clear: "If you want to change, you must change it well."
The above is a non-direct summary of what I heard from everyone at the party. It may be biased from the views of the parties involved. If there are any major differences, I hope that friends at the party will point them out. I am very sorry that I can’t remember Xinmin’s speech now. Maybe it was because Xinmin’s voice was relatively quiet at the time. I will communicate with Xinmin again another day and ask him to talk about his main ideas of that day again.
