A good way to improve your design skills

A good way to improve your design skills

So-called talent (left brain and right brain)
That is, whether you have artistic talent or not, the talent may exist, which mainly depends on the division of labor between the left and right brain of the human being. The left brain is mainly responsible for logical understanding, language, judgment, classification, analysis, and reasoning. This type of talent may be more sensitive to mathematics, logic, and detail analysis. The right brain is mainly responsible for emotion, intuition, imagination, creativity, symbols and inspiration. People of this type think emotionally and are more sensitive to music, images, space and abstract objects. The abilities of the left and right brain are not entirely innate and can be activated through acquired training. No one is born knowing everything. Even a monkey as gifted as Sun Wukong, had to travel through mountains and rivers, cross hills and ridges, and overcome 9981 difficulties in order to achieve enlightenment since he jumped out of a stone in the Eastern Holy Land. What about us? Many people have encountered this problem: why are the web pages designed by others so beautiful, but when I design one myself, the colors are wrong and the layout is ugly? In fact, there is no need to be nervous about this. I have seen the works of many masters when they first debuted, and they might not be as good as yours. So everyone must increase their confidence. Talent can be developed through acquired efforts and long-term influence.
Graduated from a fine arts or design school
This is very important. If you want to learn design well, a graduate from a fine arts or design school would be a very good background. Going through rigorous, systematic and formal training will truly transform you. As far as we know, many design masters at home and abroad, whether it is graphic, web or animation design, come from regular art schools. Just like in the Romance of Sui and Tang Dynasties, why was Wagang Village finally acquired by the Tang Dynasty? Li Shimin was born into a royal family and had received professional training to become an emperor. Unlike Cheng Yaojin, although he also had the opportunity to become emperor, he had not received systematic training and was not professional after all. Another example is Cao Cao in the Three Kingdoms. Although the identity of his godfather was not glorious, at least he had stayed in the palace. Although Liu Bei claimed to have royal blood, he was just a straw sandal seller after all. Haha, this is just a joke. However, most people do not have the opportunity to study professionally. For example, my first major is computer science and my second major is English. However, since I am engaged in the design industry, I must constantly supplement the corresponding art professional knowledge through various channels to make up for my professional deficiencies.
Long-term artistic influence
Art requires long-term influence, just like a person's temperament is influenced by the long-term influence of his environment. As the saying goes, "He who keeps company with vermilion becomes red, and he who keeps company with ink becomes black." Artistic vision or the ability to appreciate art cannot be acquired in a short period of time. The words we usually use, such as scholarly family, lady of noble family, aristocratic temperament, artistic family, can be summed up in two words: "influence". To summarize it more deeply, it is "long-term influence". For example, my family summed up me in four words, "lazy and gluttonous". This kind of temperament is of course the result of long-term cultivation.
Appreciating and imitating the works of masters is the way a good teacher produces good students. No matter how good the master is, even if you can't reach his level, at least you will be better than the average level. Now that it is the Internet age, one does not have to be an entry-level disciple or a direct disciple to become a disciple. Especially web pages, which are publicly released for everyone to see, so you can directly imitate and learn from them. Now that media is so developed, you can learn through TV lectures, online video tutorials, etc. Xinhua Bookstore has a vast amount of book resources, and no one will stop us from learning knowledge. This is no longer the era when everyone fought over the Sunflower Manual and got hurt. Not to mention the Sunflower Manual, even the Rose Manual, the Peony Manual, and the Chive Manual can be obtained by everyone. In addition, make good use of Google and Baidu, the search engine is your super library.
Return to Nature
The state of mind is very important, watching the flowers bloom and fall in the courtyard is a state of mind. Staying in the computer room all day long will make you so depressed that you won't have any inspiration at all, even if you are a genius. Go fishing, climb mountains, look at the wild flowers by the fields, the fish swimming in the streams, the white clouds in the sky. While enjoying life, think about why the colors in nature are so comfortable and the forms of creatures in nature are so strange? Can't I imitate nature? Human beings are the product of nature. Of course, what we are most accustomed to and what looks most comfortable to us is the combination of various forms and colors in nature. For example, many photographers like to go to places where there are few people, such as Tibet, or certain islands, or certain mountains. Why? Because it is closest to nature and the most beautiful place. Some people may say that scenic spots and historical sites are just so-so, and it is better to hear about the scenery than to see it. Even if you really go there, you may not get any inspiration. I used to think so too, until one day I realized the truth. I have a special connection with Songshan Shaolin Temple. I have been there twice during my travels, but at first I didn’t feel the grandeur of this thousand-year-old temple. Until one day, because of work, I had to stay in the temple for a few days. The mountains are warm in winter and cool in summer. It was summer then, so I slept on a futon (where monks meditate). I was woken up by the cold at five or six in the morning, so I simply went out for a walk. The temple was cold and deserted. One or two elderly monks were sweeping the floor, waving their brooms around in the temple. This reminded me of the monk with outstanding martial arts in Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils. There was a drizzle in the sky. When I passed by the ginkgo tree that several people could hug at the entrance of the front hall, a breeze blew and a few ginkgo leaves fell from the tree. The artistic conception was so beautiful and poetic that it really made people want to express their emotions. I picked up those ginkgo leaves and kept them as bookmarks to this day. From then on, I realized why I always felt nothing when visiting scenic spots during the day. Because when you visit scenic spots during the day, there are often a lot of people, especially in the summer. There are crowds of people, people queuing up to buy tickets, people shouting on the roadside to sell souvenirs, and unconscious tourists throwing cans and sausage skins everywhere. Maybe when a gust of wind blows, what floats over is not ginkgo leaves, but white plastic bags. Now I finally understand why the ancients often became poetic when traveling around the mountains and rivers. That was because these scenic spots had not been developed at that time.
Movies, TV shows, DVD educational films
Traveling requires both free time and money. Not everyone can go to remote places. What if you have altitude sickness? Therefore, we might as well draw nourishment from TV, movies, and DVDs. For example, CCTV-10 and some other channels often broadcast science and education films about nature, humanities, history, geography, and astronomy. These films have spectacular scenes, unique shooting angles, and often contain mysterious things that we cannot touch upon. For example, I particularly like Discovery Channel, Man and Nature, and Animal Planet. Another highlight is advertising. Designers must transform themselves from passively watching advertisements to actively accepting and analyzing them. They should look at the wonderful creativity and expression methods of their peers and learn more knowledge that is not available in books. You should also watch more movies, both domestic and foreign ones. Take domestic films as examples, such as Hero, Curse of the Golden Flower, The Promise, etc. Although the market has mixed reviews, one thing is worth affirming, that is, the artistic effects are indeed good, the scenes are grand, the decoration is beautiful and gorgeous, the use of colors is bold and flamboyant, etc. In addition, you can also buy some DVDs to watch, such as Disney's cartoon blockbusters, Toy Story, Ice Age, etc., which are all very good movies. For example, BBC documentaries are very exciting, such as the Blue Planet series and the Dinosaur series. Long-term appreciation of good films is a shortcut to improving your artistic accomplishment and enriching your knowledge.
Pay attention to the details around you
Observe everything around you carefully, maybe inspiration lies in the environment that you are familiar with, for example, you can see the first model created by 3DMAX on the computer in front of you, or you can understand the concept of Photoshop blending mode from scrambled eggs with tomatoes. Look around you, the window next to you may be the best way for you to understand the concept of masking.
Accumulation bit by bit
We often see such scenes in movies and TV shows, where a person is thinking about a problem, pacing around the room, or scribbling on a paper and then throwing it into the trash can. The camera turned around and saw that the trash can was full of papers and there were quite a few scraps of paper scattered on the ground. First of all, I want to make my position clear. Littering is wrong. Not only does it waste national resources, it also damages flowers and plants. My point is that when thinking about a problem, it is important to record various creative ideas and thoughts, even if many of them may seem unrealistic or even ridiculous. Many measures may not be used at present, or even seem to never be used. It doesn’t matter, everything can be recorded. A complete record will restore your mental journey at that time. Every idea is an unopened window. One day in the future, when you accidentally open a window that you have missed, it may be the entrance to inspiration that you have been looking for. In addition, don't expect that Xiaoyaozi will pass on his hundred years of skills to you one day. This is too unreliable. Luck like Xu Zhu's only exists in novels. Experience points are accumulated slowly by yourself. For example, your usual practices and works should be kept. At least they can be used when you apply for a job, and they may come in handy at a critical moment. It doesn’t matter if it’s old or not of high quality, old things can actually be quite revealing. When the manager saw this, he was like, wow, this guy has been designing web pages since the creation of the world, how awesome!
Beauty is sometimes expensive . A Mercedes-Benz is definitely better looking than a cargo tricycle, and the decoration of a big hotel is definitely more gorgeous than that of a convenience store. It may seem too vulgar to say this, but I think it is also the truth. Only luxury goods manufacturers can afford to hire the best designers in the world to design their products. Therefore, we might as well go shopping in shopping malls and specialty stores often. If men do not like going to shopping malls, they may also take it as an opportunity to appreciate and learn about industrial design. Here, you will have many opportunities to appreciate classic works by international masters.
Art is interconnected, and you can quote from a wide range of sources, such as literature, opera, dance, music and other art forms, to understand the true meaning of art. Art is, to a certain extent, a feeling. Integrating the knowledge learned from other forms with your design will add icing on the cake to your work and make your creativity more colorful. For example, in The Smiling, Proud Wanderer, Linghu Chong practiced the superior sword techniques of many sects including Songshan, Huashan and Taishan in a stone cave on the Cliff of Regret, and integrated them with the Dugu Nine Swords, thus acquiring a set of peerless sword techniques. This shows that not only are arts interconnected, but swordsmanship is also interconnected.
Don't avoid foreign languages
This does not mean worshipping foreign languages. It is only natural to make use of the past for the present and to make use of foreign languages for China's own benefit. The graphics, image and web design software we are currently learning are generally produced abroad. If you are good at foreign languages, you can grasp first-hand information. Generally speaking, after the English version of the software comes out, it will take several weeks or even months to see the Chinese or simplified Chinese version. Don't underestimate this time difference, this is the market. For example, if we want to learn Dreamweaver, we must learn HTML, CSS style sheets, JavaScript, etc. If you are good at foreign languages, these codes will not look so scary.
Those who like to know are not as good as those who enjoy knowing. This does not need too much explanation. Only if you are interested in design will you spend more time and energy to learn it. Otherwise, it will be difficult to achieve anything in it.
You must have a childlike heart and be full of curiosity .
Speaking of Shaolin Temple again, a senior monk enlightened me at that time. When working in the design industry, one must maintain a childlike heart and think about problems with a pure and inquiring mind. If you lose your curiosity about the things around you, you won’t be able to make a career in this industry. If nothing can be achieved overnight, just like Wukong had to go through many hardships to achieve his goal, and Duan Yu had to go through a thick book "Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils" to win Wang Yuyan's heart. It’s good to sing. Love is about perseverance. The same is true for design or life. Perseverance is the key!
